Disarmament and International Security Committee

Topic A: The Militarization of Space

Topic B: Nuclear Proliferation and the Viability of the NPT

Committee Background Guide

Please note that this is a Double Delegation committee.

Topic Description

In a world where technological advancement has extended humanity's reach into outer space, the relationship between space exploration and military competition has become critical to address. While the development of space-based technologies has the potential to bring scientific progress and global connectivity, it has also opened the door to weaponization, surveillance, and conflict beyond Earth's atmosphere. Today, nations including the United States, Russia, and China are actively developing space-based military assets, and the international community is faced with pressing issues such as outdated legal frameworks, the dangers of space debris, and the threat of an arms race in orbit.

While the militarization of space represents an emerging frontier of global insecurity, the threat posed by nuclear proliferation and the viability of the Non-Proliferation Treaty remains one of the most enduring challenges in international security. The NPT was established to prevent the spread of nuclear arms and promote disarmament, persistent loopholes, and non-signatory states, but the slow pace of denuclearization has left its effectiveness deeply in question. As DISEC works to develop effective strategies across both topics, delegates must work together to draft resolutions that ensure outer space remains a domain of peaceful exploration while bringing the world closer to lasting nuclear peace.
